Number Coding Decoding - Backward Sequence

NUMBER CODING DECODING: Coding with Backward Sequence

This is the pattern of coding which exhibits the natural correlation of Arabic numbers with alphabetic letters. For instance, alphabets A to Z are assigned the numeric codes from 1 to 26 in the reverse order like A = 26, B = 25 and so on.

  • Backward Sequence (e.g. Z = 1,Y = 2, A = 26, etc.)
  • NOTE : Backward order position of a letter = 27 − Forward order position of letter

    For Example : Backward order position of B = 27 − Forward order position of B = 27 − 2 = 25

    Example 1 : If GREAT is coded as 20 - 9 -22 - 26 - 7, then how will you code the following :

    (a) FATE          (b)  DATE           (c)   MATE         (d) RATE

    Solution :  In this question , if we assign numbers to these alphabets in the reverse order we get : A = 26 , B = 25, C = 24 ... and so on. Similarly,

  • (1) FATE = 21 - 27 - 7 - 22
  • (2) DATE = 23 - 26 - 7 - 22
  • (3) MATE = 14 - 26 - 7 - 22
  • (4) RATE = 9 - 26 - 7 - 22
  • Example 2 : If BAG = 71, then VICE = ?

    (a)  69            (b)   70         (c)   75            (d) 90

    Answer : (a)

    Solution  :  According to the backward or reverse sequence of alphabets, B = 25 , A = 26 and G = 20. If we add all these numbers we get = 25 + 26 + 20 = 71. Similarly, V = 5  , I = 18 , C= 24 and E = 22. If we add these numbers = 5 + 18 + 24 + 22 = 69 (using backward letter positions). Hence the answer is 69.

    Example 3 : If READ is coded as 9-22-26-23, then DREAM =?

    (a)    23-9-22-26-14       (b)  23-8-22-26-14             (c)  23-9-21-25-14            (d)  23-9-22-24-14

    Answer : (a)

    Solution :  In this question , if we assign numbers to these alphabets in the reverse order we get : A = 26 , B = 25, C = 24 ... and so on.

    Similarly,

    In case of DREAM,

    D=23

    R=9

    E=22

    A=26

    M=14

    So, the answer is 23-9-22-26-14.

    Example 4 : If  GO  is coded as 19-11 ,SHE is coded as 7-18-21, then SOME =?

    (a)    7-11-12-20       (b)  7-11-13-21           (c)  7-10-13-21            (d)  7-10-12-21

    Answer : (b)

    Solution :  In this question , if we assign numbers to these alphabets in the reverse order we get : A = 26 , B = 25, C = 24 ... and so on.

    In case of GO,

    G=20, subtract 1 from 20, 20-1= 19

    O=12, subtract 1 from 12, 12-1 =11

    Similarly, in case of SHE,

    S= 8, subtract 1 from 8, 8-1= 7

    H= 19, subtract 1 from 19, 19-1= 18

    E= 22,subtract 1 from 22, 22-1 = 21

    Noe , in case of SOME,

    S= 8, subtract 1 from 8, 8-1=7

    O =12, subtract 1 from 12, 12-1 =11

    M= 14, subtract 1 from 14, 14-1= 13

    E= 22,subtract 1 from 22, 22-1 = 21

    So, the answer is 7-11-13-21.

    Example 5 : If  TO  is coded as 5-10, then THE =?

    (a) 7-19-22        (b)  6-19-22         (c)  5-17-20          (d)  4-17-20

    Answer : (c)

    In this question , if we assign numbers to these alphabets in the reverse order we get : A = 26 , B = 25, C = 24 ... and so on.

    In case of TO,

    T=7, subtract 2 from 7, 7-2= 5

    O=12, subtract 2 from 12, 10-2 = 8

    Similarly, in case of THE,

    T=7, subtract 2 from 7, 7-2= 5

    H= 19, subtract 2 from 19, 19-2 = 17

    E= 22, subtract 2 from 22, 22-2 = 20

    So, the answer is 5-17-20.
